Position Responsibilities:

The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for managing a team of industrial designers and engineering unique solutions for consumer products to include: translating concepts into CAD data, development of detailed product drawings, development of prototypes and tooling, ensuring regulatory compliance and customer satisfaction. You will also provide manufacturing support to ensure component quality and total functionality for the end user.

This is a hands-on engineering position requiring that you work collaboratively with the Industrial Designers, Innovation Managers, and Product Designers. 

 

Responsibilities:

Team Leadership: The Senior Design Engineer is the go-to contact for company’s Industrial Design and Engineering needs. This individual manages the industrial design team, workflow, and necessary approvals. Strives to mentor, empower, and grow the industrial designer’s skill sets. Creates a teamwork-oriented culture that promotes the development of each individual while creating growth opportunities as a collective team.

Creative Problem Solving: The ability to look at challenges and propose solution options to best deliver against the project objectives. Develop creative and effective engineering solutions for parts, mechanisms, and production methods on key product concepts. Brainstorm quickly to provide real-time ideas and solutions.

Manufacturing Knowledge: A strong knowledge base of material properties and processing, emphasis on plastic polymers and metal forming. Functional experience with injection molding (including tooling), metal forming, metal casting processes, and assembly methods. The ability to develop and teach those around them on proper manufacturing practices

Lead Cross-Functional Teams: Developing a productive teamwork environment with other departments to accomplish group objectives. Collaborate with product designers to understand aesthetic qualities and product intent. Provide technical support and technical expertise on existing product lines. Work in a collaborative environment with marketing, production, and sales representatives to follow a design from concept to production.

Innovation in Engineering: Stay current with emerging manufacturing and material trends. Bring pertinent information back to the team to expand Company’s engineering toolbox.

Experience Required:

Minimum 7 years’ experience as a design engineer with a consumer products company.

Minimum 2 years’ experience managing a team of engineers and/or designers.

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s in Engineering a plus

Engineering Knowledge: Work with internal and external production teams to finalize, test, and approve product functionality for mass production. Create, communicate and maintain 2D & 3D engineering data for engineering solutions related to our diverse portfolio of products. Create functional prototypes and supporting materials for projects based on the stages of our development process. Expert knowledge of SolidWorks.

Product Development Skills:  Must be comfortable managing the development of food and hard-good product development and be comfortable working with cross-functional teams (internal and external teams) to ensure successful execution.

CAD Creation, Design for Manufacturing and an Engineering Mindset: This position can identify appropriate materials for products based on their usage. Their designs reflect materials and manufacturing process limitations, they include the necessary draft, threading, etc., details to make the product manufacture-able. The CAD produced is clean, editable, and well created. The engineer thinks analytically about how to approach a new mechanism, and can propose new methods and approaches to a design. Works well with industrial designers and manufacturers to execute a very highly complex design. They are a thought leader and mentor in this area.

Project Management: Takes charge of projects and can independently manage multiple projects at the same time. Keeps track of project progress and knows what to do to keep timing in check. Can estimate how long a project should take and relay timing back to key team members. The Industrial Design Manager is a trusted partner to always be on time with deliverables.

Strategy and Innovation Skills:  Must have capability to understand and apply the innovation strategies for Company pipelines – from both a product and narrative perspective.

Compelling Presentation and Writing Skills:  Must have excellent writing skills and be able to convey Strategy, Product Concepts, Marketing Stories and trends in compelling ways for internal or external use.

Expansive, Possibility-focused, and Curious mindset:  Must be able to see past the reality of today’s business and consumer world and consider the potential of what ‘could be’ in the future.  Critical ability to question the status quo, while still maintaining a pragmatic attitude about the mechanics of our business.
